Always On? Not Quite Yet
That's the title of an article published in the SD Times on December 15, 2005.
Here are a couple of great quotes:
-
The database industry's heavy hitters figure prominently in any discussion of corporate or government users who access business applications away from the office. The big four - IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and iAnywhere - each touts the ability to extend database functionality to the edges of nearly any network.
Of the four, there's little disagreement that iAnywhere has the biggest share of the enterprise-ready mobile database market.
"And they're No. 1 by a substantial margin," said analyst Jack Gold, founder and principal of J. Gold and Associates.
-
"Oracle suffers from a 'show me' problem," said Gold. "In the mobile space, the company has really yet to show significant numbers of deployments."
Indeed, the first two hits in a Google search for "Oracle Lite success stories" are customer examples from the iAnywhere Web site.
QuickBooks Enterprise uses SQL Anywhere
From "Intuit Beefs Up QuickBooks For Enterprise" October 17, 2005:
Intuit QuickBooks Enterprise Business Line Leader Bill Lucchini said the new enterprise edition features iAnywhere Solution's SQL Anywhere database. That's a big change from the proprietary C-Index database in its predecessor, Lucchini said.
The new database has helped increase performance by three to five times and marks the end of a three-year effort to move to a new open database platform, he said.

Yukon Borrowing from SQL Anywhere?
"Yukon/WinFS bears a striking resemblance in some parts to SQL Anywhere - proving that Microsoft is not adverse to "borrowing" major chunks of novel ideas and software from iAnywhere Solutions more than once."

The WebSphere Journal Review: "SQL Anywhere Studio 9 Developer's Guide"
Here's an excerpt from Berndt Hamboeck's review in the WebSphere Journal:
The book is easy to read and contains important details about SQL Anywhere development. If you're new to SQL Anywhere the material will save you hours of time and dramatically shorten your learning curve. This book is simply a must-have for SQL Anywhere database developers because it's a complete and compact reference for experienced developers as well as comprehensive immersion for beginners and less experienced coders. It's written by someone who has a great deal of experience using SQL Anywhere Studio to build real-world software solutions. Have fun reading it.

End of Life for SQL Remote ASE: October 1, 2005
On October 1, 2004 iAnywhere Solutions announced
that engineering support for the ASE version of SQL Remote will end on October 1, 2005.
The RisingRoad position is that SQL Remote is still a fine product for certain applications using SQL Anywhere consolidated
databases, but that MobiLink is a far better alternative for cross-platform synchronization solutions. And of course, if you need
help converting from SQL Remote to MobiLink, talk to us at info@risingroad.com.
